Poetry is a big deal in my
school in early May. After state testing, all English teachers delve into
units of poetry to make lessons more creative and carefree. It's also to
prep for the Poetry Lounge, where all English classes come to read poems in the
library.
This is one idea called
Magnetic Poetry, taken after actual magnetic poetry. Awhile ago, I cut
out words and phrases and photocopied them onto colorful paper. That was when I
was in a district with endless supplies. Since then, I've switched jobs
and my supply status is much gloomier. Luckily, I made SO many copies that I
still have a whole file full.
To start this lesson, I let
the kids play around with actual Magnetic Poetry, then they dive into the
colorful papers full of vivid vocabulary. A little creativity, time,
glitter and glue later and ... voila! These are the gems my students came
up with this year!
