Thursday Throw Down: Interactive Time Management and Planning for Students

So as my students were stripping November and putting up jolly snowmen, I had a moment of sheer panic! We had just begun our first class novel ( From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler) and I realized that December contained way less school days for us than I had thought. Yikes! (I would never want to have to finish a book AFTER break.) Garage sales, Book Hoarding, and The Alchemist

Every summer, I look forward to a few different things. Beach days, reading, sleeping in, and garage sales. I know some people are automatically cringing at the thought of smelly old clothes and boring “antiques”. But before your face gets stuck like that ;) … read on! Garage sales are an excellent way of revamping your classroom library. Teens get tired of their childhood books, college kids get tired of their teen books, or parents get tired of clutter and sell … regardless, I’ve scored a lot of books much cheaper than even Scholastic from garage sales. That being said, I am something of a book hoarder. I often buy books and don’t end up reading them until a few months or even years later. When I began teaching at the middle school I’m at now (a good three and a half years ago) I saw that the 8th grade students were reading the Alchemist. Over the summer, at a garage sale, I picked up the book. It has been sitting on my bookshelf, untouched until this morning.

Nonfiction in the ELA Class

Me Before the Common Core Standards... Literature Major/Reading Teacher + Nonfiction = Bleh! I'll stick to my stories! Me Last Year... Reading Teacher + Needing to start teaching Nonfiction= Umm okay, I'll spend a week on it. Me This Year... Reading Teacher + I'm Lovin Lit's Interactive Notebook products + NewsELA = acceptance! Me Last Week... REALLY wishing I had a Smartboard!!! (Yup I have a blue chalkboard. And yes my class plays "make believe" while we pretend the chalkboard is a Smartboard.) Well it has been a few weeks and my students are progressing with annotating text! They have totally accepted the "No Highlighter" rule and are using text marks to annotate their reading. They know how to find the topic sentence and details thanks to Erin's (i'mlovinlit@ blogspot.com) interactive notes. So far, so good.
